Experimenting with Themes

In the last 48 minutes, I’ve tried Astra and Generate Press as themes. Coming from the Genesis Framework, they both feel a lot more geared towards a low or “no-code” approach. Astra (although highly recommended) felt a bit bloated. Generate Press is more minimalistic. This is the free version. I can see they offer hooks etc which could have appeal. Off the bat though it’s not obvious how to disable certain features (like gigantic featured images on pages).

What I liked about Genesis was the framework — and then you could make your own child theme. Here it feels like I have to add custom css using the customizer. All inline…not liking that. Wait before any huffiness arises, please note I am being super lazy and not reading any documentation. I want to see what it is like without any preconceptions.

Noticed: In the Post (sidebar) options, there is no option to add a body (or element) class. I really like that feature about Genesis. I don’t want to edit the functions.php file in order to add classes. But I do want to add them.

I’ll update in 48 hours. or 48 days.

Time is a construct. This is a hobby.

Back in 2.4 hours. Scrapped GeneratePress too. Developing a nostalgic fondness for Genesis. Next up: the default WordPress Theme, 2024. So far it has less clutter.
